About
SnookADD is a collaboration between our team of 5 designers and the creator of ColorADD, Miguel Neiva. This project is focused on making the game of snooker more inclusive to the colorblind audience.
SNOOKER FOR ALL
SnookADD is a collaboration with the creator of ColorADD, Miguel Neiva. SnookADD makes the game of snooker possible for the colorblind audience through the use of the ColorADD sign language. During this project we developed a digital product prototype and commercial material before physical prototypes are funded.
The goal
Based on current research, around 11 million people are likely to be experiencing some form of colorblindness. In order to play snooker, colorblind players have to ask people around them to help identify the color of the balls on the table. We aim to create a game that allows players to play independently without the need to rely on others. We believe that the game of snooker should not be limiting. We are currently continuing to work with ColorADD to further research this concept and the value it has on colorblind as well as non-colorblind players and viewers. We are also working towards the production of the SnookADD ball set that allows colorblind players to enjoy the game the same way players without colorblindness can.
Process
In a team of 5, we researched this topic to better understand the impact colorblindness has on people, particularly focusing on snooker players. We made the first models of snooker balls with ColorADD symbols to see how the visual perception is impacted. I heavily focused on the digital aspect of this journey, working on models of the ball set and overall style theme. This project heavily relied on the Adobe and Autodesk series of applications to create digital examples of SnookADD. We are also using these applications to further research the possibilities of making billiard games more inclusive for people with full eyesight loss. We have identified auditory perception with elements of physical interaction as the most promising way to make billiard more inclusive. However, our main focus at this time is to deliver an inclusive snooker game.
